Key Lesson: A Leader Is a Lighthouse, Not a Tugboat<\/b><\/h2>\n

Mentoring a new person is a very responsible role. I compare it to a parent-child relationship. Initially, someone new is full of enthusiasm and looks up to you immensely. Everything you say \u2013 how you say it, how you react \u2013 becomes a point of reference for them. <\/span><\/p>\n

Years ago, I formulated a statement that remains my guiding principle to this day:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMentoring a new person means creating comfortable conditions for their growth.”<\/b><\/p>\n

Note: creating <\/span>CONDITIONS<\/b>. Not doing everything for someone. Not dragging them along. Our job is to support people so they can grow and flourish on their own.<\/span><\/p>\n

A true leader resembles a lighthouse: it shines a light that shows the way, but ultimately, every ship must sail into port on its own. A lighthouse doesn’t tow vessels \u2013 it merely illuminates their route. <\/span><\/p>\n

The Fine Line Between Supporting and Doing Things for Them<\/b><\/h3>\n

This is a mistake I see most people in this industry make. When I started 12 years ago, I did everything for my team. I was full of enthusiasm and thought I was helping. But in reality, I was creating people who were completely dependent on me. When I was absent, their results plummeted. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cA true leader is like a coach. They don’t play the game for the players. If you score goals for them \u2013 you take away their chance at their own victories.” <\/b><\/p>\n

Since then, with every new associate, I say directly: \u201cDon’t get used to me. Your business starts with you and goes down. This is your path to development.” <\/span><\/p>\n

Effective leadership means:<\/span><\/p>\n

  • Supporting, not doing things for them<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Inspiring by example, not doing things for others<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Allowing space for mistakes and learning<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Teaching competencies that lead to independence<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Setting Boundaries: Private vs. Professional Relationships <\/b><\/h3>\n

    Early in my career, I went out for a beer with a few guys from the team. We had a great time. But the next day, I noticed a change. They were more relaxed, less serious, ready with excuses. That’s when I realized most people can’t separate their private and professional lives. After a shared beer, I stopped being an authority \u2013 I was just a \u201cbuddy.” <\/span><\/p>\n

    Since that day, I don’t engage in private relationships with people I collaborate with professionally \u2013 until they reach a level where they earn serious money and treat it with professional seriousness.<\/span><\/p>\n

    I know this might stir emotions, but you don’t have to be liked by everyone. Your job is to build authority and be someone others want to follow. <\/span><\/p>\n
